Report on Tourism in Tuscany. The economic situation in 2019

Edited by IRPET and REGIONE TOSCANA – Settore Sistemi informativi e servizi – Ufficio Regionale di Statistica

On the eve of the epochal disaster represented by COVID19, after a two-year period 2017-2018 characterized by the strong expansion of tourist flows, 2019 looks like a year of substantial confirmation for Tuscany of the levels recorded in 2018. The growth is determined by the result of national tourism whose overnight stays grow by 2.4% offsetting the drop in the foreign component (-1.2%), in sharp contrast to the international trend and also to the national result (+ 1.9%).

The increase in Italian overnight stays is almost general among the different regions of origin, while the decline in foreigners focuses particularly on the European component. The seaside and rural destinations, particularly linked to these markets, and characterized by mature tourism products, therefore suffer, while Art cities hold up better.
