Prospects for a hydrogen supply chain in Tuscany: Analysis and Regional Strategy

Report edited by L. Piccini. Appendix drafted by Consorzio Polo Tecnologico Magona

The study “Prospects for a hydrogen supply chain in Tuscany: Analysis and Regional Strategy” was edited by Leonardo Piccini, as part of IRPET’s “Production Sectors and Businesses” research area.
It was carried out as part of the Institute’s institutional activity program, in agreement with the Tuscany Regional Competitiveness Directorate and the Managing Authority.

The Appendix was drafted by the Consorzio Polo Tecnologico Magona, on behalf of the same Directorate.

The report examines the role and prospects of hydrogen in Tuscany’s energy transition within the broader European, national, and regional decarbonization frameworks. After outlining the main policy and financial instruments supporting hydrogen development, it assesses the region’s potential, highlighting its strengths, weaknesses, and future opportunities.

The analysis reveals that Tuscany benefits from strong research and technological capabilities but remains at an early stage in terms of production and infrastructure. The most promising areas include energy-intensive industries, transport, and port systems, with potential synergies between hydrogen and local renewable resources. The study concludes with policy recommendations aimed at strengthening links between research and industry and guiding public investment toward a sustainable and integrated hydrogen value chain.
