Renato Paniccià chairs the session “Inequality and inequalities” at 4:00 p.m. on June 30.
On July 10, 2024, Professor Giovanni Andrea Cornia passed away. He was a passionate development economist and a formidable organizer of institutions dedicated to research, training, and practice in the field of development, such as UNICEF, UNU-WIDER, and the University of Florence. In 2006, he was elected President of the IRPET Scientific Committee and, in the same year, he was appointed Director of IRPET. His passing represents a significant loss for the many who had the privilege of knowing him as a professor, colleague, mentor, or friend.
With over 50 years of research, policy engagement, and teaching, Andrea has contributed innovative ideas, analysis, and programs to the field of social and economic development, with a particular focus on combating poverty and inequality and promoting equitable and fair development. His work and teaching have significantly shaped, influenced, and inspired generations of students, economists, and development professionals around the world.
To commemorate his steadfast dedication to the disadvantaged, his solid knowledge, his immense scientific curiosity, and his natural inclination to lead, teach, and learn from others, we are organizing a memorial conference that will bring together scholars and development professionals who worked with Andrea and will focus on one of Andrea’s favorite topics: inequality and its various dimensions.
