When we talk about the stone industry, we are referring to activities related to the extraction of minerals from quarries and mines.
The quarrying area with the largest number of quarries is Carrara, but there are other important sites in the Apuan Alps, in the provinces of Massa-Carrara and Lucca; the Montagnola Senese and Rapolano basin in the province of Siena; the Firenzuola basin in the province of Florence and finally, as regards alabaster, the Fine River and Volterra-Pomarance-Bibbona basin in the provinces of Pisa and Livorno and the Casole d’Elsa-Radicondoli-Chiusdino basin in the province of Siena.
