Investments for Urban Regeneration and Citizen Preferences

Cities are increasingly the locus of economic growth and competitiveness and second-tier cities, as an alternative to large metropolises, represent a potential balance between economic opportunities and quality of life. Urban regeneration is a key policy area to actively favour social and territorial equilibrium. This study therefore proposes the use of the Choice Experiment as a tool to capture citizens’ preferences for urban regeneration interventions. It investigates the welfare values produced by European funded projects (2014-2020 cycle) for urban regeneration interventions. The case studies focus on 3 medium sized cities in Tuscany, Italy. The results reveal that this methodology can produce useful information to design more efficient urban policies, that take into account the needs of individuals. The novelty of the study lies in its empirical application to the scantily researched topic of urban regeneration, and methodologically to the possibility to apply the results to other middle-sized cities.
