The digitization of consumption and work: new lifestyles and their territorial implications Number and possible
Regional Culture Observatory. Note 4/2024 | by S. Iommi
This note aims to address the issue of cultural changes induced by technological progress.
These are slow changes that become visible only in the long run, but in the long run they change people’s daily behaviors and consequently also the appearance of the places that are more or less frequented by them.
To highlight these slow structural changes, reference is made mainly (but not only) to ISTAT data derived from the Multiscopo Survey on Aspects of Daily Life, which have the advantage of presenting a rather long historical series. The territorial scale of reference is the national one for two reasons, because there is no reason to believe that Tuscany exhibits peculiar behaviors on the major trends analyzed and because, since these are sample data, a more aggregated territorial level ensures their greater reliability.
