Cultural sectors play a dual role in economic systems. On the one hand, they are productive activities that create job and income opportunities, particularly in education and leisure. On the other hand, they stimulate other sectors, first by attracting visitors and then fostering widespread innovation. Despite their important function, they are difficult to reconstruct in their entirety, partly because they comprise a mix of public, private and non-profit organizations. In the absence of official guidelines or a national reference model and in line with the recommendations of the Eurostat ESS-net Culture project and the national economic accounts, IRPET (Istituto Regionale per la Programmazione Economica della Toscana) has reconstructed the cultural sphere using a supply-side, bottom-up approach. Initial estimates for 2019 enable comparable economic values to be attributed to the various cultural sectors in terms of employment and added value.
