Expansion of the tram network from urban to metropolitan: the case of Florence

The study is part of the joint IRPET-Tuscany Region activities for 2024 and is being conducted as technical assistance to the ERDF Management Authority (Activity No. 3.2024). The research was led by Leonardo Piccini for IRPET’s Public Economy and Infrastructure Research Area, coordinated by Patrizia Lattarulo. The Florence tram network expansion project represents an ambitious initiative that aims to transform the urban mobility system and extend it to the metropolitan area. This development aims to reduce private traffic, promoting a more sustainable, efficient, and accessible public transportation system. The tram network, through its integration with other modes of transportation, also aims to significantly improve accessibility between different areas of the city and its metropolitan area. Furthermore, this transformation contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants, representing an important step towards ecological transition and improving air quality in an urban context often subject to environmental problems.
